Stan said port battles are all about gold. I disagree. There may be few ways to fight for ports, and gold will always be important, but other things matter as well. Voodoo is vital. Good planning always helps a lot. And coordination and communication during the execution phase can be crucial. Also, it is possible to fight for ports as a marathon, and not a sprint, by reducing your target's income for months prior to the actual attack.
Cal certainly is an asset on any team he has sided with. Of that I have seen.
Interesting you look at it from an offensive side and I view from the defensive and the similarities in each approach.
It is difficult to formulate a plan when facing a defensive posture until you see the nature of the attack.
Its usually a thrust/parry/counterthrust combination of port voodoo and GC.
Of course the port bombardment and the loss of citizens from such and the littered ships that lay in the harbors throughout Avonmora give testament to real port warfare...sigh...... maybe someday..
One of the most important things you mention is communications. Mixed comms has been the downfall of many great battles here.
