best way to do well in this game is to join a good guild
you probably got some invitations already
other wise post here again
Good guilds are lead by experienced players who take time to help you.

helm is a training guild with a good rep.
Merc or pirat are good if you want on the pirating side of the game.

avoid at all cost smal guilds lead by noobs.

Yes, browse the Guild list and find one you like, and join it.
Also, do game missions, don't get too much in fight at the beginning, explore the map (prices change every three days, so you need updated info to save some gold to build the first ships) ...
