I'm well aware that war is tragic. Fictional movies or stories are not needed for me to understand that. You however, are incredibly naive if you think just because you don't think anything can justify mass killings, that must mean nothing can justify mass killings period. Different people are different Leo. To some people, they are justified killing you because you aren't the same religion as them. Or you are an American and killing you is justified. Do you think Hitler thought what he was doing wasn't justified in his eyes? Again Leo, most people, don't do things, especially don't do hard and difficult or horrible things, unless they have a reason to do it. Now, it might be a dumb or stupid reason to everyone but them, but it's a reason none the less.
Hell, maybe they decide anyone wearing orange deserves to be killed. Or just think, killing is fun, so why not? Maybe they hate life in general and wanna cause suffering to others.
Likewise, people join the military for various reasons. The benefits maybe, to serve their country, curiosity, boredom, maybe they just want a legal way to kill who knows.
The world is not a safe and peaceful place Leo. There are monstrous people out there, there are violent people out there, and there are people who wish harm and death upon those they do not like, and ultimately, in order for you to survive, something else has to die. Life is just a big cycle of birth, survival then death. Most creatures will do what it takes to survive the best they can-if that means something or someone else has to die, most will prioritize their lives over others. War is just one group, prioritizing their needs and wants over another's.
