RP: Battle on the High Seas

Postby Jack Teach » Fri Dec 03, 2021 4:30 am

The Realism level for this one is around 2: so a bit of embellishment is ok but keep it relatively realistic for the early 18th century I.E no magic, divine intervention, or serious anachronisms. I'll start the Rp either later tonight with the next post. If you have any problems DM me don't post stuff here.

It's been a three years since the attack on Baramas and the war between France and England hasn't gotten any better. The hottest part of the war is now currently being waged in Avonmora itself. Many more ships have been sailing in, almost all of them warships, from brigs to big ships of the line. The seas are ablaze, driftwood and dead men are regularly found on the shore in various places. Taking advantage of the chaos, some bloodthirsty pirates have formed a coalition and have begun wreaking havoc on the seas. At their head is a vicious pirate by the name of Captain Charles Myngs. In the last month, a coalition of British vessels, along with some Frenchman formed a temporary truce and sailed down to the Bay of Goroum to try to put him down. Ten ships went down to Goroum, and one came limping out. Myngs now controls Goroum and has blockaded Regis and Pania numerous times. He has ten frigates, two brigs, and forty-five sloops. In short, he has half the pirates in Avonmora under his command. The French and English and now the Spanish (fighting both sides) are so busy fighting each other that they simply cannot deal with the pirate problem. Every country now pays him a hefty sum of money to keep him away from their shipping, essentially creating treaties (which he violates often on the slightest pretext before demanding a new sum of money to reinstate them). The Kings of England, Denmark, France, and Spain have ordered any private Captain in Avonmora who can successfully fight with a ship with six guns or more to come to Tortuga, assemble, and sail off to put down the pirate once and for all. In the governor's mansion, Jack, dressed in a blue coat, paces in the large board room waiting to see who'll show up.

Carl, walks in, with a familiar looking man next to him. He goes up to Jack smiling

Oi Jack, heard about the need for some men to come join a fight. I figured you could use some help. This here is Ryan, my new first mate. Helps balance out my crazy, like Brian used to.

Ryan steps forward and gives a polite smile as he bows his head- he looks just like Brian but with a patch of some sort of fur under his nose, which falls off as he bows his head before he puts it back before speaking

Hey, I'm Ryan, nice to meet you. Carl's and Brian told me a lot about you.

Jack shakes Ryan's hand

Good to meet you sir.

Jack wipes sweat away from his brow and fiddles nervously with the pommel of his cutlass.

What've you both been up too for the last three years?

Captains begin walking in, some dressed normally some expensively. The Governor sits agitated at the long table in the center of the huge room, a decanter of whiskey in his hand.

Carl laughs

Well, first year was rough, didn't have Brian to back me up with my crazy and Ryan hadn't joined in yet, but after that, Ryan showed up with a letter of recommendation written by Brian, and things were good. Next couple years we privateered in Spain for a bit before coming back when we heard about this pirate problem.

Ryan nods

Yeah, I worked with Brian helping out with the pastor work and orphanages til he heard about Carl struggling so he sent me to help him out. Next couple years was in Spain.

Ryan responds

Well' it's mixed. Brian's protestant last I checked, but he works with a catholic and Orthodox preacher who he lets share the church he made. Trying to mend the schism and all that. Focusing on what they can agree on, and charity work rather than infighting on details. Can't say he'll have much success mending that old schism, but he's willing to try. Good man old Brian is.

Carl nods

Aye that he is. What about you Jack?

jack chuckles a bit

Well that's actually a funny story. My Father's a minister in the English Church and I, being a rebellious and rather odd child, decided to do the same thing but in a different Church though I never joined another. I actually went to the University of Paris to study theology but I eventually got bored and decided to become a sailor instead. Hopped on board a London mercenary vessel, got kidnapped by pirates for two years, and have never regretted not becoming a minister, or priest or whatever since. On Sundays though, especially on important ones I usually preach to the men and I always like to pray before battle. They actually asked me to do it as most of them are Huguenots, four are followers of Martin Luther (especially my quartermaster), and the rest are Irish. Needless to say, discussion of religion is absolutely forbidden, though common prayer is often done.

Ryan nods

Good decision. Can get messy when you got a lot of folks arguing about faith.

Carl looks around a bit before speaking to Jack in a bit of a whisper

I might not be too welcome here. I did privateer for Spain in the last couple years a bit, but mostly against pirates. Occasionally against France. Only fought English if they hit me first which it did happen once or twice admittedly. But if they don't know that let's keep that to ourselves. I mostly just wanna wipe out these pirates for the good of all our nations.

Jack nods

No need to be afraid here. Most of these captains have fought other the other nations here in the past few months anyway. This pirate is...universally hated by pretty much everyone.

Jack's fists clench.

He's actually quite famous for kidnaping people. He captured two friends of mine and my sister. I was escorting them on a merchant sloop with my sloops. We were planning on dropping them off at Tortuga. They ambushed us near the coast. Four sloops came baring down on us seemingly out of nowhere. They hoisted black colors and gave chase. We fought a terrible 24 hour battle. It was awful. Our ship was barely operable at the end of it all, a third of my men aboard the 14 gun sophie were dead or wounded, and the my other ship, Amelia, had no mast at the end of the thing. They managed to seperate us and put is in a gauntlet. Three sloops surrounded us and we simply couldn't break through. They took off with the merchanmentman in less than two hours and had us fighting for the rest. We ripped up those three sloops quite well and managed to board one and take the captives. The last one limped away, the third just left for some odd reason. We were deathly afraid that the two would come back and finish us off. I'm quite thankful that they never did.
