Growing up can be scary and confusing. Hell, I am almost 35 and it is still scary and confusing at times. I have often thought about how to avoid the normal pitfalls of life, because just as you have said, it makes no sense to have to work so hard to be able to enjoy so little. The reality is as Shadow said, balance. I just came off a holiday weekend that saw me having a wonderful time with my family, a day at a gorgeous lake, a campfire in the backyard with the kids, a round of golf. Now I am back at work, but luckily I have found a job that I enjoy which makes it less "work". I have plans to do more fun things on the horizon whether it be travel or just events with friends. Everything in life is what you make of it. If you choose to enjoy life and find happy things to do within your means and working around the constraints of life's duties, then things will be just fine.
