If it feels the EPA is too onerous, it should declare itself free of it : along with that would go any federal funding for environmental related issues : no more FEMA, no more disaster aid too. No more feeding at the federal trough with pork-barrel contracts and placement of federal buildings and institutions too. If a state wants its own gun laws, it should also decline federal funds for local ATF enforcement too.
As it is, populist politicians get to campaign to keep the feds out but still take the money it gives. equalize that issue and then see what gets voted for.
After all, the precedent is there, with the current administration moving even further into defining what federal funds can be used for with regard to family planning and such.

Constitutionally, the Federal Government is restricted to a specific set of areas that it has authority over. Any authority not directly granted to the Federal Government by the Constitution is automatically under the jurisdiction of the states.

The Federal Government allocates money to States at the request of the State for the nature of that request. The FG doesn't just hand out money to States. The FG has complete authority to set conditions on the use of the money. In relation to states the conditions are generally in relation to the request, such as a request of Education Funds from the FG can only be used for Education. As for your examples, both the ATF and FEMA are Federal Agencies. The state does not provide nor is provided funds for either. The services of FEMA are done so by request from a State. ATF has jurisdiction based on federal law.

Returning federal overreach back to the states is not populism.

8 years? I doubt Trump will get reelected. And I think Phoenix was implying an assassination. And in this time, I ain't skeptical of it happening. We got extremists who hate him dearly.

And I ain't excited about Pence either. I think a smart extremist would plot both of them and then the whole cabinet. Then congress which is Republican controlled. Then the Supreme court for being Republican dominated. .

And then soon there are no branches of government.

Being honest. There is no need to replace/kill Trump. The next republican will take his place. Then so on and so on. A lot of people talking about his death just aren't thinking about the aftermath.

You can doubt all you want, and I know what he was implying.

I am not particularly knowledgeable on trump or pence, but I believe I recall hearing pence believes in electro shock therapy for curing homosexuality, not sure if its true, but if so then I would rather not have someone like that as president, considering how brutal and sadistic that is. also assassinating a president is not exactly an easy task, the secret service is much better then it used to be, and so far, every assassination of every president, or assassination attempt has ended with said assassin getting caught if I remember correctly. well I suppose if you believe the old conspiracy of a second gunner on the grassy knoll with JFK then one got away.

All it takes is one martyr willing to sacrifice fr the greater good.
the result will be chaos and even greater polarization. the police state that so many fear will be brought forward through the actions from those who oppose it.

I understand the protection detail for the President have changed their traditional warning shout of "GET DOWN" to "Donald Duck" when they see potential trouble. ;)
