FEATURE #2 - PIRATE SWORDS!

Did ye ever just really look at yer cutlass and wonder through a rum-soaked mind how it came to be? Yer cutlass be yer best friend or yer worst enemy.
Pirates are known for many things throughout history. One thing we always associate with pirates in particular is the cutlass ...

Their earlier choice of weapon, the sabre which was too big for fighting on deck and the flintock hand guns, which were clumsy and slow to load.. often becoming waterlogged when needed during high seas battles were just not performing ergonomically. Along came the cutlass. Purely a shorter version of the naval sabre.

The cutlass could not only run ye through quickly but could and was often used as battering stick ( in case you didn't want to actually kill your victim - just give em a bit of a bashing).
Seems more than one way to utilize yer cutlass.

Being shorter than the sabre for example, they were lighter and easier to swing around and short enough not to cut through nor get tangled in ropes as the larger swords were prone to do.

This obviously played a big role in whether or not one survived the battle!

Here's a 17.59min myth-busting clip which also explains a little more what swords pirates used and the swords that were popular around the Golden Age of Piracy..
(sponosor blah for the first 3+ minutes.. 3.55 mins in is a better startIng point if you are interested in knowing more about ye trusted friend what swings from ye belt ..)
