New Feature discussion: Foot battle

Postby Captain Jack » Sat Mar 02, 2013 4:01 pm

Greetings,

We got ships battles, why not also add foot battle?

This feature is destined to be added AFTER nation control feature has been implemented.

This discussion, is meant to gather all player ideas in order to design this as better we can. If you got any ideas you would like to contribute, please add.

Here is a bunch of initial thoughts:
-Every player should be able to train up to 3 unit types. Nations will get more and better types.
-Soldiers should need upkeep such as food and gold. Rum and tobacco should make them happier and tougher.
-Unit types should be upgradeable (will have levels).
-Battles should mostly take part at players hideouts to plunder a player's treasury or at a nation port, to plunder a nation's treasury.

There are more ideas that are related with features that will come before this and that have no meaning to mention now. We just want YOUR initial thoughts for now.

this could be a way to take over ports. You would have to buy influence to recruit soldiers, much like the way you have to buy influence to recruit crew members, and you would have to have a certain % of the total influence brought in that port to attack.
I'm a canny one
Scourge of the Seven Seas
Sink anyone's galleon
To murder my enemies
Whether he's been stabbed in a back street
Or a vast sea attack by the Black Flag fleet

I would like a feature whereby yellow fever and other nasty diseases cause constant attrition, the bigger the force the higher. This would keep land forces small and mean taking a city would have to be a collaborative effort. Also it would give newer players a chance to build roughly even forces.

Sorry to revive this old post, but it was referenced in this post.

In another game, ~'93-95 Merchant prince or something like that, all ships could carry troops or goods, or both. But troops would take up cargo space.
You could fill 2 out of 4 slots with troops and the other 2 with goods, for instance.

In the original Pirates game, crew from ships disembarked and carried out plunder against a port. Pirates were better armed than average citizens of a port and usually better armed than defensive militia. The ships could fire upon a port and the port had forts that had cannons that was used against attacking ships. Ship fire reduced port population and port return fire damaged ships and reduced crew.
The size of port and wealth determined the available militia standing ready to fight.
It would take thousands of crew to defeat a port that was in good shape so the port was plundered via ships to try to reduce population first.
Pirates could choose the terrain they fought in(wooded or open) when the captain choose to make landfall and disembark the crew and marched them to the port to be attacked. Pirates held the advantage if they were in wooded area and port militia were caught in the open when approaching the attacking pirates. Militia held an advantage if both warring parties met in the woods or in the open due to numbers and militia was usually considerable larger than attacker crew.

Just some musings from the original game and how it operated and ports were won and lost to perhaps draw ideas from.

I think this idea would add a new realm to the game. It would make it harder for people to maintain the balance between ships and troops.

And It would further separate those who were able and those who are not as more or less superior. Those who adapt the fastest will have an upper hand, and everyone else will be forced to adapt or be destroyed. This would be further enhanced by those who learn to adapt to those who have already adapted...

In other words, survival of the fittest...I like it.
