Server Migration April 12th and CONTEST

Postby Captain Jack » Sat Apr 10, 2021 9:59 am

Ahoy everyone,

At Monday, April 12th, around 05:00 UTC (Also, game time) the game will be migrated to a new server.

The migration should last a few minutes. This means it will be completely unplayable for these minutes.
Once migration is over, the game server might not be available to everyone right away due to how internet works.
This is why a plunder ban will get in force before the migration and will last for 24 hours.
Although, it should be okay at 10 minutes, I want to ensure that any propagation issues will not become a nuisance for anyone.

The new server is a mandatory step we need to take in order to upgrade our systems to the latest security updates and brand new hardware. While the new server has been measured to be a lot faster than current one, you will not be noticing any considerable differences as the current one is fast already.

To celebrate the upgrade and also in order to pinpoint this plunder-free day, I am also declaring a contest.
Submit your idea here on how the day should be named and what impact it should have on Avonmora.

The best idea will be incorporated into the game, which means that every year on April 12 we will have this special day (like Kaptain's day) and the one who submits it will win a special achievement + 500 credits.

Anyone can participate. I will pick the top ideas and a community vote will open. Details will be given on the voting page when it is setup.

Pirates across Avonmora reluctantly had to accept that April 12th, 2021, there would be no plundering. Merchants would sail safely that day. However, the pirates expected to get something in return. This year, there would be no plundering on April 12th, but to make up for that, there would be a LOT of plundering on April 12th the coming years. This way will forever be known as the Plunderfest!

Suggestion: On April 12th, to be called the "Plunderfest", plundering only costs 2 turns, instead of the normal 4 turns.

+1, although I would suggest an alternative, that instead of plunders costing half the turns, they give double the gold and the maximum plunder would also be doubled.

My own idea for April 12th:

To recover from the expenses lost from the first April 12th, Pirates have a day of rejoicing on the April 12ths to come! All players with more than 10 ships have 3 unremovable FFJs placed on them for the duration of the day, from 00:00-24:00

The new, faster server should be able to handle it, if this one can't already ;)

Pacifest: 24 hours, every fleet gains 3 danger per hour for 24 hours, and plunder cap is removed.
All of this, on April 12th :pirateflag

Each plunder has a 50% chance of either costing half the turn amount or rewarding double plunder.

Pirates cannot be attacked or cast against for the duration of the event (except by other pirates).

Skirmishes reward as normal plunder (paid by the game).

April 12, henceforth Plunderpalooza, is a day on which we all take a moment of silence to remember lost plunder.
...
...
...
Once the moment of silence is over, ready your cannons for double plunder and listen to them roar all day!

I suggest base plunder amounts (not incl. piracy or salvage) be doubled, paid by either player or game to make up for 2021's lost plunder.
Perhaps a combination, like game pays double piracy or salvage on this day while players pay double plunder?
Oh, and maybe a scoreboard at the end of the day to show the top plunderers for the day! Could even offer prizes for the top spots.

Could also increase shipwright price to 100% for ships stolen in the last 24 hours? Just a thought I had while I wrote this.

Event idea: Migrationfest

Rather than basing the event off of the plunder ban, this event is based off of the server migration, with an option to transport immigrants for larger amounts of coin (this would be an additional option besides just transporting immigrants for plantation purposes), with some inherent risk involved that should have pirates salivating over the profit opportunities. (There are 2 different ideas I have for how that additional risk would be implemented, with one adding danger to to fleets partaking in the event making them easier to hit, and the other just offering large payouts for skirmishing those fleets).

Citizens of Avonmora are unhappy in their existing ports and are looking to immigrate to new ports – and they are offering a fair bit coin to anyone who will carry them elsewhere. (Not sure what the ideal amount to keep things balanced is, but maybe 15-40 coin for travel to a different port). These immigrants are carrying a lot of coin on them, and when pirates see the passengers carrying their savings onto and off of the ships, their eyes light up at the idea of relieving them of that purse. Ships carrying immigrants for the event gain 1 danger when they leave port and gain 2 danger, rather than 1, when they arrive at a port.

Plunder attacks on these ships would pay out the normal plunder amount, plus an additional ransom (from the attacked player) equal to the amount they would have gotten transporting the immigrants, plus additional loot taken from the passengers (paid by the game).

Alternatively, the immigrants are willing to pay more depending on what ships are carrying them: they feel much more secure in a war ship like a Ship of the Line or Man-of-War than in a Howker, and are willing to pay a premium for that safety. No additional danger is given to the fleets, but skirmishing these fleets (and these fleets cannot escape from a skirmish like fleets normally can) gives the same payout of a plunder attack, plus some additional loot taken from the passengers (paid by the game).

I agree with doubling plunder cap, but I think maybe it should be a 50/50 split by player and game. What I mean is if plunder cap is at 500,000, maybe player pays 250,000 and game pays 250,000. It would help players with not an abundance of coins not get demolished in just a few hours and lose all coins and maybe a few ships. I think that anything past 250,000, the game should pay for.

As Soliel mentioned, a scoreboard of some sort would be a nice add-on, and I support it. And as for the reward, maybe some credits can go to the top 5.

The pirates can only attack pirates idea, mentioned by William Pitt, is something I am not in agreeance with, as I think everyone that wants to join in the fun festivities should be able to attack anyone they want to.

Maybe for skirmishes, you can get a 15-20% chance of doubling the amount you receive as a reward(not the money from the resources, or the amount from piracy levels). I feel that if we go over the 20% chance, skirmishing might get a little out of hand, but that is just me.

Piracy levels should stay the same. I think it is important to not make this day too profitable, and while yes, that is the main focus, it would also put people who have something going on.

I think that apart from what I just said, everything should run normally, so something like danger should not be changed, and should only be affected with voodoo(this would also help people who have something going on, so they don't have the fear danger going up, which was something I think a few people mentioned).

And as Haron suggested, I also think it should be called Plunderfest :pirateflag

day of peace. effect of hostile waters and disfavor are reversed. turn cost for plunder and skirmish is reduced by one. to top it all, cost of buying turn packs (not double turns) is halved :pirateflag
